Project description

Life for orphans in Uganda is hard. Hunger, fear and despair are constant companions. To make a living, many of them do the heaviest work — some in quarries.

Apwoyo e. V. wants to send a signal here. Every child on this earth should have the right and the chance to develop — and that includes play and sport.

Project status

In cooperation with the local schools, we have already three football pitches built: 2022 in Otuboi, 2023 in Orusia and Apapai.

Free jerseys came too — for two teams in 2022, two more in 2023 and four teams in 2024.

Project background

The sports grounds let the children forget their worries and fears for the length of a game.

Involving the village community turns it into a shared project that benefits everyone in the end — the pitch belongs to the village, not to us.

Implementation

For each pitch, sizeable stretches of bushland had to be cleared of wild growth by hand over weeks. The children helped enthusiastically.

The pitches that emerged bear no comparison with German sports grounds, but they serve their purpose — and they were built by the people themselves.
