Project description

They eke out their lives on the streets and in the alleys of the towns; their life is a daily fight for survival. They live on alms, on scraps from the rubbish and on small, occasional thefts.

Some of the boys and girls are only six years old and have to hold their own in this world, entirely alone. Their lives are marked by hunger, violence, fear and pain.

To some of us these children are invisible, because we do not want to see them. They do not fit our idea of a perfect world, and they show us that we have failed as a society.

Project status

With our project for street children in the town of Soroti we send a signal of charity and humanity.

Every child received new clothes, hygiene items and a personal gift. And every child could eat as much as it wanted, just once — without having to beg or steal.

Project background

The children we met were extremely friendly and grateful — grateful above all that someone saw them as people.

A young woman aged fourteen years came to us with her six-month-old baby and thanked us especially for the baby clothes we handed her. This baby’s future will remain uncertain to us.

Implementation

The project is deliberately low-threshold: we go where the children are, instead of expecting them to come to us. Distribution is personal, without conditions and without anything asked in return.

If we can, we will continue this project next year as well.
