Project description
Dear friends and supporters,
in 2023 the primary school in Otuboi was in a shocking state. The buildings were badly damaged and in places at risk of collapse. The roof leaked, windows and doors were destroyed and the veranda running around it had fallen apart.
Almost everything was missing from the classrooms. Old blackboards were barely usable, exercise books and textbooks did not exist. Many children sat through lessons directly on the bare concrete – or even on plain earth.
Plaster was crumbling from the walls, and one classroom held a termite mound nearly two metres high. What seems unimaginable to us is sadly daily life for many children in Uganda.
But this is exactly where we wanted to help.
Project status
After Apwoyo e. V. presented the situation, Mr Stefan Pütz of Pütz Group Holding GmbH decided, together with his staff, to fund the school’s complete refurbishment.
Once funding was secured, building began at once. Over 40 local workers worked six days a week from sunrise to sunset.
The old roof was removed and damaged windows, doors and floors completely renewed. The old blackboards and crumbling plaster were taken out, until in the end only the bare walls remained.
In just seven weeks, the entire school complex was completely refurbished and rebuilt.
Project background
In many regions of Uganda, education is not a given but a rare privilege.
Classrooms are often overcrowded, and many schools have neither enough seating nor suitable teaching materials.
In rural areas above all, children learn under the harshest conditions. Desks, books, writing materials or even safe buildings are often lacking.
Despite these challenges, the children show an impressive will to learn and great hope for a better future.
With our school projects we aim to create better learning conditions in the long term and open new prospects for children.
Implementation
Throughout the project, the construction work was accompanied and supervised on site by helpers from Apwoyo e. V.
Alongside the full refurbishment of the buildings, new classrooms were prepared and safe learning conditions created.
Working with local labour meant not only efficient building – it also supported the regional economy.
Today the children learn again in a safe and dignified environment.
