Dear friends and supporters,
classrooms in Uganda are frequently extremely overcrowded. In many schools more than 200 children are taught by a single teacher.
Pupils often sit until the fifth year directly on the bare concrete floor – or even on plain earth. In some regions there are sand fleas in the ground that can cause painful inflammations of the feet.
Many schools have only old blackboards and hardly any teaching materials. School chalk is often in short supply, and most families cannot afford books or exercise books.
Despite these difficult conditions, the children have a strong will to learn and great hope for education and a better future.
Project status
With the support of donors and partners, Apwoyo e. V. has already equipped several schools and classrooms with new school desks.
The restored classrooms in Ousia were also fitted with quality seating, so children can learn in better conditions.
A sturdy school desk with a steel frame and wooden tops costs €50 and seats three children.
On request, donated desks can be inscribed with the sponsor’s name.
Project background
Education is still a privilege in many regions of Africa.
Families often have to pay school fees for their children to attend. School uniforms are compulsory on top of that. Many parents cannot afford these costs.
As a result, many children – girls especially – leave school after only a few years to help in the fields or at home.
Besides building and renovating schools, Apwoyo e. V. therefore also supports the equipping of classrooms with desks, blackboards and teaching materials.
Implementation
Our school desk projects are carried out together with local partners and craftsmen.
The benches consist of sturdy steel frames with solid wooden tops and are designed specifically for long-term use in schools.
By equipping the classrooms we create not only better learning conditions but also a safe and dignified place for children to learn.
