Project description

Dear friends and supporters,

in 2023 we found the primary school in Otuboi in a shocking state. The buildings were badly damaged, the roof leaking, windows and doors destroyed and the veranda partly collapsed.

Lessons took place under extremely difficult conditions: children sat on the bare floor – often on plain earth – without exercise books, textbooks or enough teaching materials. One classroom even held a termite mound two metres high.

What is barely imaginable for us is daily life for many children in Uganda.

But we chose to look — and to act.

Project status

Thanks to the generous support of Pütz Group Holding GmbH, funding for this project was secured in the shortest time.

Building began immediately afterwards. Over 40 local workers worked six days a week from sunrise to sunset.

In just seven weeks the entire school complex was completely refurbished and rebuilt.

Today the school again offers safe and dignified learning conditions for hundreds of children.

Project background

In many regions of Uganda, education is not a matter of course but a privilege.

Classrooms are often overcrowded, sometimes with more than 200 pupils per teacher. Lessons frequently take place in the open air or through the windows, because the rooms do not offer enough space.

Most children have neither books nor writing materials. Often there is not even chalk for the lessons.

Many families cannot afford the school fees or the compulsory uniform. Girls in particular are affected and leave school early.

Yet education is the key to a better future.

Implementation

Once the funding was secured, the school was completely stripped out. The old roof was removed, as were damaged floors, windows and doors.

The buildings were taken back to their bare awalls and then completely rebuilt.

Throughout the construction phase the project was accompanied and supervised on site by members of Apwoyo e. V.

Working with local labour meant not only efficient building, but also support for the local economy.
