In July we were able to hand the 2,000 donated glasses over to the organisation „Brillen ohne Grenzen“.
The glasses were collected over recent months, then cleaned by specialists, their dioptres measured and repackaged.
Broken or no longer usable glasses are recycled and reused as raw material for industry. „Brillen ohne Grenzen“ relies on sustainability here and works professionally on reusing raw materials.
Used glasses and old hearing aids can still be dropped off at Bücher Volk in Saarburg or at Ingbert Dawen be dropped off in Serrig.

Project status
Two years ago we opened a The glasses station in Apapai opened. Since then the local population has been supplied there with as-new reading glasses, and trained staff have been on site from the start.
This year we were also able to win over a local optician for the project. Alongside the usual reading glasses, it is now also possible to make custom-made glasses produce.
Demand in the region is so great that we have expanded the station considerably. Private donations equipped it with a chart projector, a phoropter, refraction aids, trial lenses and a slit lamp — making genuinely comprehensive care possible.

The glasses were collected by all of us over recent months and are now being cleaned by specialists, their dioptres determined and put to their new purpose.

Project background
Thousands of children and adults in poor countries have no access to eye care. Glasses are an unaffordable luxury for them, within reach of only a very few.
Impaired vision severely limits these people’s quality of life.
In children, loss of visual acuity can lead to school failure, developmental delay, learning difficulties and even juvenile delinquency.
In adults, uncorrected vision can lead to unemployment and thus to further poverty.
In older people, vision problems limit everyday activities and cause them to lose their independence.
Implementation
This is where the voluntary work of BRILLEN-ohne-GRENZEN.
Glasses of every kind (old or new), with or without correction, are collected centrally, pre-sorted, cleaned, their dioptres measured and repackaged.
The glasses station in Apapai
The glasses station in Apapai gives local children and adults access to vision aids.
Suitable glasses are issued here and simple eye tests carried out, making daily life lastingly easier.
The work at the glasses station is done in close cooperation with local specialists and committed staff. This ensures continuous care and targeted support for the population.
Vision aid in everyday life
Impaired vision has a direct effect on learning, work and independence. In rural areas especially, support close to home is decisive in avoiding lasting disadvantage.
The future of the glasses station
The glasses station is to be expanded further so it can reach even more people.
The aim is to secure the service permanently and raise its profile in the region.

For €50 — the postage on a 5-kilo parcel to Uganda — 150 people in need receive new glasses and a new outlook on life.
All used glasses can be dropped off with our Apwoyo e. V. members, at the Hörstube Saarburg or at Bücher Volk in Saarburg.
